Hastwell & Lightfoot [McLaren Vale SA], Vermentino 2019

The Hastwell & Lightfood team has released a pair of Italian varietals under their "Mediterranean Collection" programme.
This Vermentino was established in that receptive region of McLaren Vale [SA] in the early 2000's and has since found favourable footing and expression.
The label and clear bottle continue the minimalist yet eye-catching style.
Vermentino is traditionally an Italian variety prominent in the Campania / Sardinia regions of Southern Italy.
The varietal profile has translated well to a more muscular Antipodean expression.
The sharp acid provides a counterpoint to the primary fruit delivery and perceived palate sweetness [12.5% Alc].
The immediate profile is anchored in the pineapple sage and lime fragrance range.
It is aromatic and vividly refreshing with high notes of straw and hazelnut.
This Vermentino would have confounded me in a blind tasting options as it straddles the flavour boundaries and could be reflective of a few other European varieties such as Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc and Gruner Vetliner.
This Hastwell & Lightfoot 2019 Vermentino is a textural, very enjoyable drop which would lend itself to a range of dishes such as Asian salads, mild curries and grilled salmon.
We enjoyed ours both as an aperitif and with a grilled octopus and lemon-dressed green salad.
With only 250 cases made, it is bound to be an active cellar door seller.
