Gartelmann Wines [NSW], "Phillip Alexander" Mudgee Cabernet Merlot 2016

Boom Boom !!! Jorg Gartelmann and team have released two chest-beating reds from the Rylestone region of Mudgee [NSW]. They are, by denomination from Bordeaux grapes but these thumpers are on New World steroids, reflective of its terroir.
This 2016 Cabernet Merlot, named after Jorg's young son, is definitely no shrinking violet, although the initial nose reflects some of that floralness attributable to the 47.5% Merlot component.
Camphor, blackberries, tobacco, a hint of mocha all combine to deliver a sweet, punchy and warm [14.7% Alc] long palate finish.
The Merlot contributes a perception of almondy smoothness and midpalate plumpness to complement the doughnut profile and grunt of the Cabernet Sauvignon.
The crunchy ripe fruit, tannin grip and sweet glycerol combination slides across the palate in a seamless transition.
With already 4 years of development, this is definitely not a red to be quaffed or taken lightly. It would be ideally suited to a meaty mixed grill as well as to rustic mushroom stews.
We sipped ours with a lamb / mixed vegetable roast
