Gartelmann Wines [NSW], "Georg" Petit Verdot 2016

The Gartelmann team has released a pair of Bordeaux-style wines from the Rylestone area of Mudgee [NSW]
This 2016 Petit Verdot is named after Jorg's grandfather Georg Meyer, anecdotally an ace WW1 fighter pilot of grit and pugnacity
Those same characteristics are reflected in this regional Petit Verdot with already 4 years of development
Traditionally Petit Verdot is the "little brother" in the traditional Bordeaux blends due to its steely tannin contribution.
Here it endeavours to find its varietal expression as a stand-alone performer, reflective of its elevage and terroir
This Gartelmann 2016 Petit Verdot punches in at a declared 15.2% Alc with no holds barred.
Glycerol sweetness, astringent tannin grip and a supercharged delivery of ripe fruit all lead to a textural sweet'n'sour profile
The lingering, searing acid component, is necessary to counterbalance and support the ripe fruit and oak combination
This is definitely a red blockbuster which would benefit from food-matching.
Hearty protein-laden casseroles, venison and even charcuterie platters would find a convivial match
